The Wilderness

MIDNIGHT RANGE: A mountain cabin with one extra chair beside the hearth. Outside, the ridge has disappeared into darkness. Inside, a coat hangs drying near the door, a tobacco pipe rests on the mantel and the fire has settled to a steady glow.

A knock comes later than expected. No one asks how long the traveler intends to stay. Someone simply moves the chair closer.

There is a particular comfort in finding that a place has been kept for you.
